UW football: Practice report
Tom Mulhern has covered sports in Wisconsin for over 25 years and joined the Wisconsin State Journal staff in 1998, taking over as writer to fight for the UW football team a year later. The Madison native and a graduate of East High and the University of Wisconsin has covered five Super Bowls, two Rose Bowls and a Final Four. Mulhern lives in Marshall and has three son.Five observations from the University of Wisconsin practice football team Wednesday, the first in full pads:
1, BUDMAYR INJURY: Most people thought it was a matter of time before Russell Wilson took up a quarter and what happened Wednesday. After four days of splitting snaps, Wilson got all the work on the first offense, while sophomore Jon Budmayr missed with an apparent injury to his throwing arm.
Budmayr had problems in practice on Tuesday, when he was short on several shots.
Injury would be extended Budmayr a concern, of course, especially since redshirt rookie Joe Brennan would have reached the exit strategy.
Whenever Budmayr struggled in the spring, it was nothing compared to Brennan. While Brennan snaps were extremely limited in the previous two practices open to the media, he looked a little better while earning a job with the second team.
This simply underscores the importance of landing the Wilson transfer, given the injury history Budmayr and lack of experience behind him.
Budmayr suffered a partially torn muscle in his right forearm during the camp as a rookie and missed nearly eight weeks. He also missed most of his years in high school with a broken right clavicle.
He appeared in three games last season and is only a quarter with experience on the list behind Wilson, a three-year starter at North Carolina State.
The good news is probably Wilson completed the largest percentage of his passes in three practice open to reporters.
He showed his creativity when he avoided a sack and completed a pass of 24 yards to running back James White on third-and-10 during a segment of movement of the ball.
