Dayton Police Department seeks NRA Foundation grant for new equipment
With financial support from a nonprofit guardian of the Second Amendment, the Dayton Police Department will bolster its law enforcement toolbox.
The department is preparing a grant application to the NRA Foundation, a nonprofit arm of the National Rifle Association. Regional grant monies that could support the department and other entities in the foundation’s South Texas region stem from fundraising banquets that the also nonprofit South Texas Friends of the NRA organizes, one of which will be held Aug. 16 in Beaumont.
Every banquet ticket sold, each item donated for bidding and all of the underwriters will support a cause that could aid the Dayton Police Department.
If awarded, a $25,000 grant would help the Dayton Police Department protect and serve the community by fulfilling its equipment wish list.
“We’re looking at getting 700 to 800 radios, some Tasers and some evidence equipment,” Dayton Police Chief Pete Douzat said.
Knowledge of the grant originated from the inaugural South Texas Gun, Knife and Coin Expo held June 25-26 at the Dayton Community Center. An NRA representative attended.
“My administrative secretary, Tammy Alexander, was at the gun show,” the chief said. “The guy from the NRA said something to her and told her about these grants. That’s how we found out about it.
“Anytime we can find something like that, we’re glad to be able to do it.”
Half of the money that the South Texas Friends of the NRA raises remains in the region to be distributed in the form of grants awarded to law enforcement agencies, education programs, ROTC, 4-H, shooting sports and other types of applicants.
The Friends’ overhead is 4 cents on the dollar, so 96 percent of the local funds are poured into grants, South Texas NRA field representative Liz Foley said.
“We’re very proud of our low overhead in that it allows us to put absolutely as much money back into the grant programs as possible so that our donors can be confident that their money is being used wisely and for what it was intended for,” Foley said.
