The Museums for America grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services will go to Michigan State University Museum in East Lansing, the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor, the Detroit Science Center, the Arab-American National Museum in Dearborn and the American Museum of Magic in Marshall. “Michigan’s museums are home to many important state and national treasures, and these grants will help share those resources with more visitors,” Levin said. “I am proud these museums were selected out of scores of applicants nationwide, reflecting the great work being performed by these institutions.”The Detroit Science Center will receive more than $87,000 to develop an interactive approach to informal education, providing hands-on learning and volunteer opportunities for middle school students through its “Junior Docent Leadership Development” program. The audience for the program will be students in grades seven and eight attending Detroit’s University Prep Science and Math Charter Middle School. The Arab-American National Museum will receive $150,000 to expand its educational outreach program, “Understanding Arabs, Arab-Americans and Islam,” to high school and college students in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. The project will include training, workshops, educational materials and traveling exhibits. The product will expand the museum’s capacity and visibility as a resource for information about Arab-Americans.
Hopgood also joined residents and community leaders in celebrating the grand reopening of the Romulus Public Library. The library, which closed May 1 due to budget cuts and failed millage requests, is now open to the public on a part-time basis as a result of private support from the Friends of the Romulus Library, other sponsors and the help of volunteers.
